This is a story about identity, of a girl raised by a single mum and an absent father. It shows the vacuum that the absence of a father can leave in a child’s life. It shows the need for a sense of belonging, to have a people, to be chosen, to be associated with, whether to a spouse, parent, extended family or even friends. Also shows, how difficult it is to disassociate with family. Mma was always related to her mother. Even when she dint regard her highly and wanted nothing to do with her, she was called upon to right her wrongs by virtue of being her daughter.
The book shows the importance of family in African traditional setups. How the traditions and traditional practices affect and direct their lives. The loyalty people give to it and how it shapes their actions. The sense of belonging it gives both intentionally and unintentionally.
It shows how strenuous a relationship between mother and child can be. How parents make choices with the child’s best interest at heart even when the same children are oblivious to their parents actions. Sometimes they seek to make a mence, although it often too late. This is depicted in the relationship between Mma and her mum Ezi, Ezi and her parents, and Ezi’s husband and mother-in-law. However, the book shows how when one’s actions are brought to light, the children often notice the thoughtfulness in their parent’s actions which shows the magnitude of parental sacrifice.
The book also explains love, love lost and the difficulties in marriage. It shows how love can be so strong but one unexpected action can change its dynamics. It also brings out male chauvinism in relationships where a man wrongs a woman, but the woman is the one expected to apologize for and accept the error. Key lesson learned from the book is that ; If one loves something/somebody, they ought to fight for it and make it work. This tends to save people from a lot of heartache and distress.
Though the book started off a bit bland, it got better and interesting as I read along and a bit sad and teary in the end. I however did not appreciate the use of local dialect. I found that they were not translated adequately to easily blend in with the stories. I could have missed some portrayals brought forth in the book simply because I skimmed over the local dialect sections. All in all, it was still a good read.
The review paints a familiar picture of what most people go through in their daily lives, matters of parenting, male chauvinism, love among others. Your analysis of the book clearly draws to mind a story that anyone can relate to making you want to read the book for yourself to find out the finer details of the story. This a good analysis of the book that triggers both sweet and bitter memories and experiences of our daily occurrences.
A fascinating discussion is definitely worth comment. I do believe that you should publish more about this issue, it may not be a taboo matter but usually folks dont speak about such subjects. To the next! Cheers!!
Interesting one … this I resonate with and would love to read in person. You have definitely spiked my interest with your short but witty summaries, perhaps even ignited a fire from a dwindling flame I had to indulge in at least a book a week!
Can I simply say what a relief to uncover a person that actually understands what theyre discussing on the net. You actually know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More and more people should check this out and understand this side of the story. I was surprised you are not more popular because you surely possess the gift.

When parents accept, love, and show affection to their children, even when they make mistakes or fall short of expectations
Could not agree more MilaRT. Parental love that is unconditional is vital to teach children that their worth is not based on their achievements or perfection, but on the essence of who they are.
